Should You Drain Your Pool in the Fall?

As autumn arrives and pool use decreases, some clients ask us whether it’s better to keep their pool full until next summer, or if it’s better to empty it? With preventive maintenance for autumn and winter, you can keep your pool full of water and in good condition.

Unless there’s a very significant repair needed for technical or sanitary reasons, our recommendation is that there’s no need to empty your pool water during the colder months of the year.

Reasons not to empty it

• The water inside the pool shell exerts pressure that helps to compensate for the external pressures the structure receives. And this is beneficial during the colder months.
• An empty pool is exposed to ground conditions and temperature changes without the counterbalance of the water. This can lead to serious structural problems or issues with the linings and waterproofing.
• Keeping your pool water during winter is also a measure consistent with a more responsible use of water resources.
• If you empty your pool and then refill it before summer, you will increase water consumption. This means an extra expense on your water bill every year.
